What is Deprogram?

Design In London immerses participants in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cultural adventures. Key figures from William Shakespeare to leading contemporary designers have lived and work in the city. Their creative output has shaped global culture with a unique blend of inventiveness, humor, logic, beauty and curiosity.

Three Intense Weeks From July 6 To 25, 2003. Distance creates perspective. By participating in de-program you elect to place yourself in a new environment. What was familiar becomes distant, what was distant becomes familiar.

Applicants can register for either the Product Program in London or the Communications program in the Netherlands.

The Product Design program is based in London and will include a trip to the Netherlands. Participants will visit leading product design studios in the greater London area and Europe. Tutors include Dick Powell http://www.seymourpowell.com and Ron Arad http://www.ronarad.com well known London based designer and Professor of the Royal College of Art.

We plan two studio projects oriented towards global and regional culture and the future. We are inviting a number of interesting designers to drop in and present their work during the event and get involved in the projects. We will make museum and studio visits.

The Communication Design program is based in the Netherlands and will include a four-day trip to London. Participants will visit with leading designers in Amsterdam, Breda, Den Haag, Rotterdam, Antwerp, London and other select locations. Tutors include Bob van Dijk / NLXL (www.nlxl.nl) and members of Studio Lust (www.lust.nl).

Who Goes?
In the past the program has included practicing designers, design educators, graduate students and advanced undergraduate students with backgrounds in the appropriate design discipline. Admission is based on a portfolio review: 10 to 20 slides and a statement of intent. Students are eligible for three graduate or undergraduate credits.

How much does it cost?
The cost is $3,300 dollars US. This covers accommodation and tuition and some museum entry fees. A $300 deposit is due by April 18 2003 and the balance, $3,000 is due by 23 May 2003. Applicants with the best work will be selected to participate. The application fee will be returned to unsuccessful applicants.

What is not included in the fee?
Individually, participants are responsible for airfare and ground transportation to and from London for the product participants and Den Haag, Netherlands for the Communications Participants. Participants need to allow extra funds for meals, a few supplies, personal ground transportation and spending money.

How do I apply?
Print and forward the attached application form with a postal note or money order application fee for $300 US.

Include images of 10 to 20 examples of your work as slides or as jpeg files on cd and a self addressed stamped envelope for return of your work
