A position has become available within the in-house Industrial Design Department at JCB for an ALIAS Industrial Designer. Reporting to the Studio Manger, they will be responsible for day to day design support of projects throughout the JCB group of companies. They will be responsible for ensuring all ALIAS data output and workflows group-wide meet JCB’s existing in-house requirements; whilst helping to ensure ALIAS modelling best practices at JCB are continually advanced in line with Industry Standards worldwide. In addition, he/she will function on a daily basis as a part of the in-house Industrial Design team producing vehicle concepts & overseeing designs to production in conjunction with project engineering staff. Their output will be in the form of both sketches and 3D CAD work. Day-to-day duties: • Help define and implement digital modelling best practices suited to the manufacturing processes associated with off Highway Vehicle Design. • Support the ongoing advance of free-form surface design and modelling standards - to assist in the research and implementation of technologies and workflow improvements from related design Industries. • To actively support data progression from initial sketch concept through to final production release – at all times data output must be robust, suited to manufacturing constraints and embody the design intent of department. • To interface effectively with all in-house and external teams and departments associated with new product development; the successful candidate must be able to effectively defend and preserve the integrity and value of the designed surface at all times. • Reduce cost & time required for mock-up creation group-wide through the use of appropriate CAD resources to assess and formally communicate styling requirements. • Ensure costs & timescales associated A-surface CAD generation are optimised through the application of fast, efficient design workflows. • Maximise timescales available within Department to produce the optimal production solution, through the application of effective Industrial Design project management skills. • Support the development of accurate Physical and Digital mock-ups so design can be assessed in detail at early stages – saving time and money downstream. • Ensure all prototype body panels are production-accurate, so development machines used for testing can realistically assess design performance.

Requirements:

A BA (Hons) Industrial Design degree with exceptional sketch & presentation visualisation skills is required. The candidate must also have a working knowledge (5 years min) of ALIAS modeling - from 3D Concept Definition through to Industry “ClassA” production release standard. Proven experience in the design of Off Highway Vehicle interiors/exteriors would be preferred, as would experience achieved through exposure to Automotive/Product Design environments. A proven history of overseeing projects from sketch through to production (including rapid prototyping of intent) across a diverse range of vehicles and products is required, as is Photoshop, Illustrator and general PC ability. Experience of being able to adhere to working practices within an Industrial Design context is also a prerequisite. The successful candidate must have the personality to work as part of a busy team whilst networking with business groups throughout the Company.
