The Real Future....
The Third Annual Photoreal competition is now unveiled and Design-engine.com
is leading the way towards the future of design. The competition
involves more than 200 entries of cutting edge computer assisted
or 'photoreal' furniture and its reflection in the virtual world.
The aim for many designers and in this competition is to develop
the submitted concept fully with the help of computer modeling
and rendering software then hone the concept using materials and
lighting. From the competition sake the goal is to allow designers
to show off a bit their designs and allow them (the designer)
to represent the possibility of existence to something that does
not exist and also to generate a little fame at the same time.
The competition takes a developed concept and realizes it with
a sense of feel and touch. The competition allows the designer
to develop and shape seating without cost for prototype or manufacturing.
The viewer does get a clear sense of what it would be like to
experience sitting on the photoreal.
.
Notice how the rendering software
and respective imagery gives a sense
of texture to the furniture.
Design and design awareness is growing all over the world. The
ability to communicate form to the public novice as well as the
head CEO of a major manufacture is the dual goal. The direction
of the industry is one of ever changing perimeter and is a powerful
driving force for the economy. The communicative ability of the
photoreal is essential to the designer and the manufacture and
eventually if production insures, the buyer. The development and
application is happening before our eyes.
The competition is based on any original computer generated
furniture or seating product created using any computer aided
design software. As the exciting world of design accelerates in
the coming years you will see more and more levels of competition
for the development of design and the communicative nature of
the photoreal. This all sounds like an episode of the Matrix and
in a way, it is. The shaping of our society is based on two things
creativity and communication. Birds fly, fish swim, humans create
.
And this creation is now more than ever being developed at incredible
speed.
The development of the art and design of each piece by each designer
has an underlying quality of human body form. The ability to be
construct of each product using CAD software from the original
sketch has to be precise and resemble the real world.
Last year judging was based on creativity, use of materials,
lighting, creativity, photoreal, creativity and innovation. Basically
it all boils down to if the judge likes it or not. This year we
again left it up to the judges. We have as many winners as we
have prizes.... truly everyone wins.
First lets discuss the judges of the competition in alphabetical
order. Patrick Chia furniture designer, born in Singapore
and studied Industrial Design in Australia, Patrick Chia was discovered
by Philippe Starck when the later bought his first piece of furniture
for the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles. Since the launch of his
first collection, Chias work has been exhibited extensively
around the world. In 1998, the squeeze bench was acquired
by the Tel Aviv Art Museum as part of its permanent collection.
Rob Curedale- Industrial Designer opened his own firm, Axis
Design, in 1990 in Australia. The firm's products are a part of
the permanent collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
Miles Hawley- Industrial Designers responsible for assuring
the excellence of PDD's industrial and packaging design work in
terms of creativity, appropriateness and quality. Miles' design
experience has been developed during is 14 years in consultancy,
creating and developing innovative new products.
Ken Krayer The College for Creative Studies is also on
board, look for an interview with Ken on Design-engine.com
in the near future.
James Ludwig is the Director of Design for Steelcase North America;
a part of Steelcase Inc. Steelcase is an international work effectiveness
company whose knowledge, products and services enhance the quality
of people's lives in work environments. Look for an interview
with James on Design-engine.com in the near future. His product
portfolio includes furniture systems, seating, lighting, storage,
architectural and technology products, and related products. Tim
Power is an American furniture designer living in Italy. His claim
to furniture and lighting is a mile long.. Richard Smith Industrial
Designer in England.
Marc Tanner- Industrial Designer could not participate in the
judging. His vacation on a sailboat in the Caribbean was more
important. Finally William Taylor, product line manager surfacing
tools of and from PTC.
The choices they were to given to make were tough, and with the
ideals of the communicative movement growing ever-stronger decisions
were hard pressed.
First place:
1
Purity Rocking Lounges, was
the overall
winner and for good reason the beautiful
render was inspiring to most of the judges.
The design entry made by Scott Wilson for Mod/ the creative director
at Nike timing division, the Purity Rocking Lounges, was the overall
winner and for good reason the beautiful render was inspiring
to most of the judges. This chair ranked either first or second
on the judges lists. The subtle line mixed in the reflective flooring
gives way to the sharp design by MOD the name for the Scott Wilson
Design firm. The curvilinear structure was the power and the great
addition of transparency and shadow.
2
The Metaflo Hybrid Couch, is black
and white couch that creates a balanced
form, almost as if the yin and yang
symbol had been stretched into existence
The number two selection is by Eric Wang, the Metaflo Hybrid
Couch, is black and white couch that creates a balanced form,
almost as if the yin and yang symbol had been stretched into existence,
the clarity of the appearance is quite the show stopper. Even
the female persona lounging on the piece is well conceived.
3
Third in the competition is the Blimp
Chair, made by Graham Gibbion and
Nevine Nasser, this is a really well
executed form, the fabric is probably
the most realistic.
This competition is a rousing success Design-engine.com
would like to thank all of the contestants for the hard work and
we expect great things from all of you.
