Rules for the 2004 Photoreal Competition

We've assembled a barrel of monkeys this time (pun intended). Industry leaders in the toy design industry have decided to lend their expertise in critiquing this competition's entries. What better reason to RENDER your vision of the future.

WHO WAS ELIGIBLE?
Industrial Designers, Product Engineers, 3d Illustrators, Inventors, 3d Artists, and Students, and toy designers alike from anywhere in the world. It is open to both professionals and manufactures, design firms, game designers, video game designers, students, instructors and enthusiasts of toy or pet design are all welcome! Everyone likes to play with those toys! Download the press release now!

WHAT WAS ELIGIBLE?
Any original photoreal plaything, that is typically but not limited to products that a person could use to entertain themselves. Video game renderings and Toys created using any design software i.e. Vellum, Alias Studio, MAYA, Autodesk Inventor, 3d Max, Rhino 3d, Solid Works, Solid Designer, 3d, Unigraphics, ICEM, or Wildfire, Think3, Vecterworks, Catia, SDRC, Microstation to name a few. This competition is seeking computer-generated renderings of toys: for all ages, all size, shape and texture. I would venture to say that Photoshop was used on 95 percent of the entries. Maybe we can get them as a sponsor this year.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION?
This is the fourth design contest hosted by Design-engine.com. The first, held in the Fall of 2001, focused on photoreal chair designs and attracted participants from around the world. The 2002 Photoreal electronics competition followed the same guidelines, but focused on hand-held wireless products. The 2003 International Furniture Competition came back for a second round because furniture is so popular amongst designers. This is why we are changing it up each year. The PDF entry form is available for download. Art work for the 11"x17" poster is available for download as well. You may email us your entry by sending to competition@design-engine.com

As with all of our competitions, judges may decide to have two or more winners depending upon the awards available from our sponsors. Members from participating sponsors, jurors, companies and their friends not to mention Application Engineers from software vendors are all eligible to win. This competition will have a few prizes too. Don't worry however, there is a new person in charge for prizes getting shipped out this year!

ABOUT THE JUDGING?
The judging will take place online probably the second week of January 2005.

ABOUT THE PRIZES?
Alias has made available two seats of Image Studio. Design-engine.com will also make available various prizes ranging from rare Agave Tequila from Mexico to figurines from the acclaimed Rotofugi (a designer toy store/gallery and gallery that caries limited run artist toys in Chicago). Design Engine Education has also agreed to give away (two) one week class offered.

CRITERIA?
This International Photoreal Toy design competition will look at photo realism and innovation in design equally. You know we love those slick renderings but it is really about innovation and communication too.

THE DEADLINE
The deadline is January 15st 2004. Because of the sheer number of entries, judging occurs over a five day period.

OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF
* Entrants grant Design-engine, Inc. the right to reproduce slides, transparencies or digital images in the premier 2004 Design-engine.com Annual. Some entries may also appear on Design-engine's web site, competition party probably in China early next year, and any other promotional purposes.

*Design-engine.com assumes all entries are original and are the works and property of the entrants, with all rights granted therein. Design-engine.com is not liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the entrant. Not responsible for lost entries.

*Design-engine.com will notify winners by e-mail by Mid January 2005 after judging is complete. Winners will be requested to send personal bio. Winners will also be showcased at the Design-engine.com party which will probably be held in China the first of next year.

2005 FOR NEXT YEAR? Look for 2005 and hardware! We are already planning the 2005 photoreal Hardware Competition for Home Depotesque. Think of hand held electronic drills, bags and saws to hammers and don't forget that wheel barrel your mom uses. We already have Home Depot lined up for dropping some cash for this one! Depot is interested in what you have to share so they can build it. We will do our best to make sure the designer gets the credit and profits that may arise.
