Announcing the Third Photoreal Competition

We've assembled a beauty this time. Industry leaders in the furniture design field have decided to lend their expertise in critiquing this competition's entries. What better reason to enter your vision of the future.

WHO WAS ELIGIBLE?
Industrial Designers, Product Designers, Engineers, 3d Illustrators, Inventors, 3d Artists, and Students from anywhere in the world. It was open to both professional manufactures, design firms, and students, as well as enthusiasts of environments, seating and furniture design. Everyone likes dope furniture!

WHAT WAS ELIGIBLE?
Any original photoreal seating product, that is, typically-but not limited to- products in which a person could interface their body in a seated or lounging position. Products created using any design software i.e. Vellum, Alias Studio, MAYA, Autodesk Inventor, 3d Max, Rhino 3d, Solid Works, Solid Designer, 3d, Unigraphics, ICEM, or Pro/ENGINEER, Think3, Vecterworks, Catia, SDRC, and Microstation to name a few. This 2003 competition seeked computer-generated renderings of seating products: outdoor seating, stackable furniture, sofas, lounges, bar stools and hot tubs. (Hot tubs were accepted because you lounge in a seated position). I would venture to say that Photoshop was used on 95 percent of the entires. Maybe they should sponsor next years event.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION?
This was the third design contest hosted by Design-engine.com. The first, held in the Fall of 2001, also focused on photoreal chair designs and attracted participants from around the world. The 2002 Photoreal competition followed the same guidelines, but focused on hand-held wireless products. As with all of our competitions, judges may decide to have two or more winners depending upon the awards available from our sponsors. Members from participating sponsors, jurors, companies and Application Engineers from software vendors are all eligible to win. So your entry better be good. This competiton has quite a few prizes.

ABOUT THE JUDGING?
The judging took place online. Rob Curdale suggested next year we conduct the judging in the South of France. (That's a great idea, the Design-engine.com staff is working on corporate sponsors to fly us and eveyone there!)

ABOUT THE PRIZES?
THE PRIZES ARE: Steelcase Leap chair, Haworth X99 Chair, scaled prototypes of furniture models, a lounge chair from Pulse in Canada, 3d classes, web design classes, and a trip to London for two complements to the Cobalt team at Ashlar Inc. Nike has also generously donated an assortment of watches to the judges. Click here for the juicy details and pick out which one you want to win. Check these prizes.

CRITERIA?
This International Photoreal design competition looked at both at photo realism and innovation in design for modern culture equally. You know we love those slick renderings but it is really about innovation and communication too.
