Getting files from the old 3DCD.

11.07.00

The Assistant Online website and Assistant CD-ROM have replaced the 3DCD as our source for sample files. Some of the files from the old 3DCD are in the Assistant Online in the Pit section. If you're looking for a file that isn't available there, just connect an Irix SGI to read data from the Irix-only CD.

Don't have an Irix SGI machine anymore? Well friend, you're in luck. I updated the 3DCD to V9.0, changed some elements, and will post it to the A|W website soon. If you want a copy of the files right now, contact me and send a DAT tape or 2 Iomega Zip disks (Mac or PC format) and I'll send you the data.

There was an NT-readable CD labelled "3DCD" in the A|W Studio V8.5 NT internal marketing materials, but it's just a copy of the 3DCD; the textures, shaders, etc. are still the same V8 Irix wire files.

changes from the original data
- changed most pix images from Alias format to Tiff format
- updated the wires, shaders, textures, lights, environments to V9.0.1 format
- made all 8 bit images 24 bit
- mapped all texture references relative instead of absolute

how to use these archives
Some of these archives are flat; they contain only files. But pix, pix_noref, shader, shader-all, texture, texture-all, and miscellaneous contain subarchives.

On Irix, gunzip the archive then tar -xvf archivename to untar the archive.

On Windows, because the zip format doesn't understand folders, you must make the folders yourself. Make folders with the same names as the archives and subarchives and dump the contents of each of these archives into them.

If you're using Studio V8.5 on Windows, you can use these wire files by converting them with the from90to85.exe program in the bin folder of your Studio installation. Run this program from the MS-DOS command line to convert each file you want to use. Do this to the wire files in animations.tar.gz, lights.wire.tar.gz, models.tar.gz, particle_systems.tar.gz, shaders-all.tar.gz, textures-all.tar.gz

descriptions of the 3dcd archives

environment/

environment.tar.gz (44 KB) - 8 environments stored separately

light/

light.tar.gz (177 KB) - 22 lights stored separately

if you'd rather work with all the lights at once, download and open this one wire file - lights.wire.tar.gz (64 KB)

pix/

i separated the pix images into two archives; the first has all the images used as textures in 3dcd models, shaders, textures, lights, and environments.

pix.tar.gz (48 MB) includes
construction_materials.tar.gz
earth_sky_weather.tar.gz
fabrics_papers.tar.gz
glass.tar.gz
humans_animals.tar.gz
metals.tar.gz
patterns_fractals.tar.gz
plastics_rubbers.tar.gz
stone.tar.gz
woods_plants.tar.gz

this archive has the pix images not used as textures - pix_noref.tar.gz (57 MB)

shader/

shaders.tar.gz (2 MB) includes
construction_materials.tar.gz
earth_sky_weather.tar.gz
fabrics_papers.tar.gz
glass.tar.gz
humans_animals.tar.gz
layered_shaders.tar.gz
liquids.tar.gz
metals.tar.gz
patterns_fractals.tar.gz
plastics_rubbers.tar.gz
stone.tar.gz
woods_plants.tar.gz

if you'd rather see all the shaders in each category at once, download this archive instead; it contains one wire file for each category - shaders-all.tar.gz (235 KB)

texture/

textures.tar.gz (548 KB) includes
construction_materials.tar.gz
earth_sky_weather.tar.gz
fabrics_papers.tar.gz
humans_animals.tar.gz
liquids.tar.gz
metals.tar.gz
patterns_fractals.tar.gz
stone.tar.gz
woods_plants.tar.gz

if you'd rather see all the textures in each category at once, download this archive instead; it contains one wire file for each category - textures-all.tar.gz (113 KB)

wire/

animations.tar.gz (4.2 MB) - 15 wire files, movies, readme's
models.tar.gz (15.2 MB) - 24 wire files, some readme's
particle_systems.tar.gz (3.2 MB) - 14 wire files, movies, readme's

boring old config files and such that, in all likelihood, you won't use:

miscellaneous/ miscellaneous.tar.gz (17.1 MB) - animation/motion capture

misc_data/ misc_data.tar.gz (2 KB) - 4 legacy configuration files

option/ option.tar.gz (2 KB) - 4 legacy configuration files

sdl_procedurals/ sdl_procedurals.tar.gz (40 KB) - 21 sample sdl files

shelves/ shelves.tar.gz (30 KB) - 6 shelves and a readme text
